Dr. Smith is a native of Houston, Texas, where he was salutatorian of his high school class. Steven attended Columbia University in New York, N.Y., for both his undergraduate and medical school training. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society.
Following his education in New York, Dr. Smith completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the combined Boston University-Boston City Hospital program in Boston, Massachusetts. He received full certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1980. Following his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, Steven was awarded full certification by the American Board of Radiology in 1983. Working under the tutelage of the internationally known neuroradiologist, Dr. Samuel M. Wolpert, Dr. Smith completed a two-year fellowship at Tufts-New England Medical Center, devoted exclusively to neurological imaging. Steven gained familiarity with MRI during its earliest years in the United States, securing visiting fellowships at the Cleveland Clinic and the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Smith began his career in the Albany area in 1985. He interpreted the first MRI examination performed in the Capital Region. In 1991, he joined the medical imaging staff at St. Peter's Hospital, where he has been Chief of the Neuroradiology Section. In 1995, he was a charter recipient of the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology of the American Board of Radiology, recognizing his subspecialty skills in neuroimaging. He is a founding Member of Albany Advanced Imaging and serves on our interpretive staff.
Steven lives in Loudonville with his wife and two children. His recreational activities include skiing and golf. He is a Senior Member of the American Society of Neuroradiology. He is a member of the American College of Radiology, the Eastern Radiological Society, New York State Radiological Society, Medical Society of the County of Albany, and American Medical Association.
